Yancey County Mountain Heritage Center/Cultural Resource Commission
In December, 2001 the Yancey County Commission established the Cultural Resource Commission/CRC at the time that the “Old Brown Dorm” (late 1800 era dormitory for the Yancey Collegiate Institute) was refurbished and christened as the Mountain Heritage Center. The purpose of the CRC and Mountain Heritage Center is to help identify, preserve, enhance and promote the county’s cultural resources to benefit the community’s quality of life and its social and economic well being. The center collaborates with and helps coordinate efforts of organizations, agencies, institutions, business, and individuals active in Yancey County’s cultural life and economic development.
The Mountain Heritage Center is located in the School Circle Historical District which has developed into a cultural arts center for Yancey County. This includes the Parkway Playhouse, Yancey County Board of Education, The Burnsville Gym, “Kids Mountain” Playground and the home of the Yancey County Library (formerly Burnsville Elementary School)
The center has twelve studios available for rental which includes all utilities and tenants’ access to wireless broadband Internet.
Some of the offices housed in the center include: Traditional Voices Group, Yancey County EDC, and the Parkway Playhouse
