The Yancey County Board of Elections conducts municipal, county, state, and federal elections in compliance with North Carolina election law and under the supervision of the N.C. State Board of Elections.

2026 Primary Election: Key Dates (North Carolina)

Primary Election Day: Tuesday, March 3, 2026 (polls open 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.)

  • Absentee ballots begin mailing: Monday, January 12, 2026
  • Voter registration deadline: Friday, February 6, 2026 (5:00 p.m.)
  • Early voting: Thursday, February 12, 2026 – Saturday, February 28, 2026 (ends 3:00 p.m.)
    • Thu, Feb 12 – Fri, Feb 13: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    • Mon, Feb 16 – Fri, Feb 20: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    • Mon, Feb 23 – Fri, Feb 27: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    • Sat, Feb 28: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Absentee ballot request deadline: Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (5:00 p.m.)
  • Absentee ballot return deadline: Tuesday, March 3, 2026 (7:30 p.m.)

Note: Absentee deadlines can differ for military and overseas voters.

Ways to Vote

  • Early Voting: During early voting, voters may vote at the Yancey County Board of Elections office. Same-day registration is available during the early voting period. Learn about early voting
  • Election Day: On Election Day, registered voters must vote at their assigned polling place. Election Day info (NCSBE)
  • Vote by Mail (Absentee): Registered voters must request an absentee ballot using the official NC Absentee Ballot Request Form. Vote by Mail info (NCSBE)
  • Curbside Voting: Curbside voting is available for voters who are unable to enter the voting place without physical assistance. 
  • If You Have an Issue at the Polls: If there is a problem with your eligibility, registration, or required ID, you may be offered a provisional ballot and receive instructions for next steps.

Voter Photo ID

Photo ID is required for in-person voting in North Carolina. See acceptable IDs and what to do if you don’t have one: Voter ID (NCSBE).
