The tax department consists of two sections the Tax Assessor's Office and the Tax Collection Office. See the Frequently Asked Questions section for more information, in addition to the information listed below:

Tax Collection

The main function of the Tax Collection Office is collecting and accounting for County real and personal property taxes.  In addition, the Tax Collections Office is responsible for collecting registered motor vehicle taxes for Yancey County and the Town of Burnsville.

The Tax Collection Office seeks to achieve the highest possible tax collection rate while serving the citizens of Yancey County in an efficient, responsible and courteous manner.


Tax Assessing

Yancey County Tax Assessor's Office is responsible for generating revenue through property taxes to be used in funding local county government.  We identify all taxable property, determine an assessed value & prepare tax notices.

We are located at 110 Town Square Room 2 Burnsville NC in the County Courthouse.  Tax Office hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Exemptions and Exclusions

Property Tax Relief on Permanent Residence

Elderly or Disabled Homestead Exclusion:

This exclusion is for homeowners at least age 65 or those that are totally and permanently disabled.  To qualify, the income of the homeowner and spouse must not exceed $25,600 for 2008.

Disabled Veterans Homestead Exclusion:

This exclusion is for Honorably Discharged Disabled Veterans that are 100% totally disabled from a service-connected disability or that received benefits for specially adapted housing under 38 U.S.C. sec. 2101.  There is no income test for this exclusion.

Circuit Breaker Homestead Tax Deferment Program:

This program limits the amount of taxes one must pay annually on their permanent residence to a fixed percentage of their income.  The amount of taxes above that percentage is deferred and does not have to be repaid until such time a disqualifying event occurs.  Examples of a disqualifying event would be death, transfer of the property, or the property is no longer the taxpayer's permanent residence.  Deferred taxes that become due must be repaid including interest from the date the taxes would have originally become due.  To qualify, the income of the homeowner and spouse just not exceed $38,400 for 2008.

Taxpayers qualifying for more than one program may only apply for one.

Homestead Exemption - Physicians Certificate of Disability (not to be used for the Disabled Veterans Homestead Exclusion - That certification must come from the Veterans Administration or other Federal Agency.

Property Tax Relief On NC Motor Vehicle

Disabled Veteran NC Motor Vehicle:

This exemption exempts from taxation a motor vehicle given to a qualified disabled veteran by the United States government or motor vehicle altered with special equipment to accommodate a service related disability.
